About Mesothelioma

What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the thin membranes ( mesothelium ) lining the lungs, the abdominal cavity, or the heart. Virtually all cases of mesothelioma - approximately 90% - are linked to asbestos exposure.

The disease is difficult to diagnosis and very few treatment options exist.

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles. Mesothelioma has been diagnosed in those who worked with or in the vicinity of asbestos, including asbestos workers, construction tradesmen, women steelworkers, shipyard workers, family members, as well as in people who live close to asbestos mines.

Mesothelioma is especially dangerous because it can affect people who have experienced even low levels of asbestos exposure. Even brief exposure to asbestos, lasting a matter of weeks, can place a person at risk for this rare disease. All commercial types of asbestos fibers can cause mesothelioma.

Symptoms from the disease can appear as long as 20 or more years after the first exposure to dust containing asbestos. Most cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed 30 years or more after the first exposure to asbestos.
